NFL Market Update — Tuesday, September 8, 2026
Tuesday brought a real wave of Week 1 information around the NFL. Starting jobs were settled, several injury situations became clearer, and a few major contract and roster developments hit during the day.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
WHAT WAS REPORTED
Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay reached agreement on a new three-year contract extension Tuesday, keeping Mayfield from reaching free agency after the season.
The deal is expected to land around the current upper tier of the quarterback market, roughly $55 million per year.
Tampa Bay also got two important offensive pieces back on the practice field. Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan returned to work after dealing with toe and knee injuries.
The Buccaneers also released their Week 1 depth chart, with rookies Rueben Bain Jr. and Josiah Trotter listed as starters on defense.
BETTING IMPACT
This is a strong day of news for Tampa Bay.
The Mayfield extension removes a major off-field storyline right before Week 1, while getting Egbuka and McMillan back gives the offense a much better chance of entering Cincinnati close to full strength.
The rookie starters on defense are worth watching against Joe Burrow because Tampa Bay is asking young players to handle major roles immediately.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
WHAT WAS REPORTED
Andy Reid said Patrick Mahomes will “most likely” start Monday night against Denver as he completes his recovery from last season’s knee injury.
The more concerning news is at left tackle.
Reid said there is a good chance Josh Simmons does not play because of his lingering back injury. Simmons has not practiced since August 17.
If Simmons cannot go, rookie Kahlil Benson is expected to start at left tackle.
BETTING IMPACT
Mahomes trending toward playing is obviously the most important positive.
But the left-tackle situation is a legitimate concern. Asking an inexperienced tackle to protect Mahomes’ blind side against Denver’s pass rush is one of the more important matchup issues on the Week 1 board.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
WHAT WAS REPORTED
Nick Bosa will play Thursday against the Rams.
George Kittle is also trending toward playing as he continues working back from his Achilles injury.
San Francisco did receive another defensive-line setback. Sam Okuayinonu suffered a broken foot and has been placed on injured reserve.
BETTING IMPACT
Bosa returning is a major boost to the pass rush.
Kittle returning would give the offense back one of its most important receiving and blocking pieces.
The concern is depth behind Bosa. Okuayinonu’s injury leaves San Francisco thinner at defensive end and increases the importance of Bosa staying healthy.
LOS ANGELES RAMS
WHAT WAS REPORTED
Aaron Donald will not travel to Australia and will not play against San Francisco.
Donald recently returned after two years away from football, but the Rams decided he needs more time before returning to game action.
Myles Garrett, however, is expected to play after working through a knee issue during camp.
BETTING IMPACT
Garrett being available keeps the Rams’ pass rush dangerous, but Donald being ruled out removes what could have been one of the most difficult interior matchups on the board.
That is good news for San Francisco’s offensive line, especially with uncertainty at left guard.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

New England agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
For Wednesday night, starting center Ben Brown is out with a knee injury and did not travel.
TreVeyon Henderson also remains uncertain after missing consecutive practices with an ankle injury.
Christian Barmore returned to full participation.
BETTING IMPACT
Brown being out forces New England to change centers immediately before the opener.

Safety is the biggest concern.

Jeanty’s ankle remains one of the situations worth watching before Sunday.
