College Football Market Update — September 9, 2026

RUTGERS

WHAT WAS REPORTED

AJ Surace will start at quarterback Friday night against Boston College. Dylan Lonergan has not practiced since suffering an undisclosed injury during the fourth quarter of Rutgers’ loss to UMass. Lonergan may dress only as an emergency option.

BETTING IMPACT

This is today’s most actionable college football development because it is a confirmed quarterback change.

Surace completed 6 of 9 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in relief last week. He competed closely with Lonergan during the offseason, so the downgrade is smaller than a typical starter-to-backup move. However, Rutgers is entering a road night game with an inexperienced quarterback after allowing 30 consecutive points and more than 200 rushing yards to UMass.

Boston College’s rushing matchup improves, while Rutgers could use a more conservative offensive game plan.

NC STATE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting linebacker AJ Richardson will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a biceps injury against Virginia. Da’Kaari Nelson is expected to assume a larger role.

BETTING IMPACT

Richardson is an important loss for NC State’s run defense and linebacker rotation. The Wolfpack must make a permanent personnel adjustment instead of managing a short-term absence.

This is not normally a major standalone point-spread adjustment, but it becomes more important against physical, run-heavy opponents.

RICE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back Quinton Jackson will not play against Notre Dame. Jackson is one of Rice’s most important offensive weapons and a major part of its option-based rushing attack.

BETTING IMPACT

Rice ran for 465 yards in its opener, but Jackson’s absence removes one of the offense’s best runners. Quarterbacks Jacurri Brown and Gael Ochoa will remain heavily involved in the ground game, but Notre Dame can devote more attention to the quarterback-run portion of the offense.

This is a downgrade for Rice’s scoring projection and makes it more difficult for the Owls to sustain drives as a massive underdog.

PENN STATE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Linebacker LaVar Arrington II is expected to miss four to six weeks following offseason surgery.

Defensive lineman Owen Aliciene, defensive lineman Armstrong Nnodim and linebacker Elijah Reeder are questionable against Temple but are reportedly nearing returns.

Tight end Gabe Burkle and running back Alex Tatsch were held out of the opener as precautions and were healthy enough to play. Defensive back Zion Tracy and defensive lineman Cooper Alexander are available.

BETTING IMPACT

Penn State still has several front-seven players working toward full availability, but the overall update is more positive than negative. The Nittany Lions should have enough defensive depth against Temple without forcing questionable players into major workloads.

The bigger betting concern is whether Penn State keeps its starters on the field long enough to cover a large number, not whether these injuries materially threaten an outright win.

HOUSTON

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back Re’Shaun Sanford returned from his second ACL injury and scored on a 56-yard run in Houston’s opener.

Makhi Hughes, reunited with head coach Willie Fritz, led Houston with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown. The two backs helped the Cougars produce 228 rushing yards against Oregon State.

BETTING IMPACT

Houston now appears to have a legitimate two-back rotation after entering the season with questions surrounding Sanford’s health and Hughes’ recent production.

This improves Houston’s offensive floor and ability to control possession. Sanford supplies the explosive element, while Hughes can handle the more consistent workload. Their availability makes Houston more dangerous against defenses that struggle with physical rushing attacks.

LSU

WHAT WAS REPORTED

LSU finalized its 105-player roster without former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. The remaining roster positions went to defensive end Gabriel Reliford and cornerback Aidan Anding.

BETTING IMPACT

The decision removes the uncertainty surrounding whether Wright and Harris would join LSU’s active roster. Neither player should be included in LSU personnel projections.

Reliford and Anding add defensive depth, but the decision does not create a meaningful adjustment to LSU’s current power rating.

CLEMSON

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Dabo Swinney defended Clemson’s roster construction following a 51-10 loss to LSU, the largest defeat of his Clemson tenure. The Tigers allowed 644 yards while producing only 145.

No major quarterback change or new injury announcement accompanied today’s comments.

BETTING IMPACT

This is not an injury-based adjustment, but Clemson’s performance requires a substantial reevaluation of both lines of scrimmage. The Tigers were badly overmatched and now face Georgia Southern.

The primary betting question is whether the market downgrades Clemson enough or whether the Tigers remain overpriced because of their name and preseason expectations. The matchup may offer a rebound opportunity, but Clemson should not automatically be trusted to cover a large spread.

DUKE–ILLINOIS

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Illinois allowed 194 rushing yards against UAB in its opener while transitioning to a 3-3-5 defensive system. Duke enters Saturday’s matchup with a run-first offensive approach.

Illinois is currently favored by approximately one touchdown.

BETTING IMPACT

This creates a potential matchup advantage for Duke. A productive running game would shorten the game, reduce possessions and make it more difficult for Illinois to create separation as a favorite.

Duke still must show enough passing ability to prevent Illinois from loading the box, but the early matchup points toward Duke and the underdog spread rather than Illinois laying a full touchdown.

TODAY’S BOTTOM LINE

The strongest confirmed personnel news is Rutgers changing quarterbacks, Rice losing Quinton Jackson and NC State losing AJ Richardson for the season.

Penn State’s availability report is mostly encouraging. Houston’s healthy two-back rotation deserves an upgrade, while Clemson’s disastrous opener requires a broader power-rating reassessment even without a new injury announcement.
