BETTING IMPACT

Florida State’s biggest problem is where these absences are concentrated. The Seminoles will be missing multiple defensive backs, while Kirkland is doubtful. Nichelson’s late addition to the out list removes another experienced defender from the middle of the unit, and Desir is unlikely to provide his usual help along the defensive front.

That matters against Kevin Jennings and an SMU offense built to play fast, spread the field and force defensive backs to communicate in space. Florida State allowed several coverage breakdowns against New Mexico State, and its depth will face a much tougher test tonight.

The probable designations are encouraging. Jones and Barker are expected to play and would provide badly needed help in the secondary.

Kevin Jennings is not listed on the availability report. The throwing-hand injury he sustained during camp is not expected to keep him out tonight.

BETTING IMPACT

SMU will be without two starting safeties in Moses and Milliner-Jones, along with Gilbert at cornerback. That is the Mustangs’ most important injury concern and gives Florida State a potential opportunity to attack an inexperienced secondary.

The problem for Florida State is that Carter is out and Gelsey is doubtful, reducing the receiving depth available to exploit those absences.

SMU is also thin at running back, with Kelly and both Rhodes brothers unavailable. The Mustangs still have Kendrick Raphael available, so this is a depth concern more than a complete backfield collapse.

BOTTOM LINE

Both teams enter the game depleted in the secondary, but Florida State has the more concerning overall injury profile because its defensive-back losses are joined by Nichelson being ruled out and Desir being doubtful.

Jennings being available is the most important offensive confirmation for SMU. Daylon Singleton’s status and any changes involving Florida State’s doubtful players are the final pieces bettors need before kickoff.
