The biggest shock of Thursday’s slate came in Piscataway, where UMass snapped a 16-game losing streak by beating Rutgers outright as a 29.5-point underdog.

Rutgers scored on its opening possession, but UMass responded with six consecutive scoring drives and carried a 24-7 lead into halftime. William Watson III completed 80 percent of his passes, threw three touchdowns and added 40 rushing yards.

Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan threw three interceptions and lost a fumble before being replaced by AJ Surace. The Scarlet Knights allowed five sacks, rushed for only 30 yards and failed to force a turnover.

UMass covered by 45.5 points. The teams combined for 58 points, sending the game 3.5 points over the closing total.

BETTING TAKEAWAY

This was not a fortunate underdog cover. UMass controlled the game and won outright. Rutgers’ offensive-line problems, quarterback turnovers and inability to run the ball are immediate concerns heading into its next game.

Alonza Barnett III threw for 158 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground. Duke Watson rushed for 110 yards on only seven carries, including a 64-yard touchdown.

UCF covered the massive spread by 24.5 points. The Knights nearly cleared the total themselves, and the 79 combined points finished 20.5 points over the number.

UAlbany reached the Buffalo one-yard line during the final seconds. A potential go-ahead touchdown was erased by a false-start penalty, and Buffalo stopped the Great Danes on the remaining plays.

Austin Simmons was outstanding in his Missouri debut, completing 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns before leaving before halftime. Donovan Olugbode caught eight passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Missouri’s defense held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to only six yards during the opening half. The Tigers’ reserves were much less effective after halftime, surrendering nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns.

BETTING TAKEAWAY

Missouri’s starters looked dominant, especially through the air. However, this was another example of the risk involved when laying more than 50 points. Once the starters left, the favorite no longer had much incentive to protect the spread.

The game’s defining moment came immediately before halftime when Houser launched a 54-yard Hail Mary that landed in Ty Robinson’s hands, giving Illinois a 21-13 advantage.

Ca’Lil Valentine added a 51-yard touchdown run, and Ismael Kante returned an interception 59 yards for a score.

UAB rushed for 194 yards and controlled possession for more than 41 minutes. The Blazers lost by 19 but covered by 8.5 points. The 65 combined points finished 10.5 points over the total.
