A Difficult Environment in Fargo
There are several intangibles to consider in this matchup.
The last meeting between these programs came in the 2016 FCS national championship game, when North Dakota State defeated Jacksonville State 37-10. This meeting presents a very different challenge, but the atmosphere inside the Fargo Dome should once again be a major factor.
North Dakota State’s home field is valuable under normal circumstances, and it should be especially rowdy for a matchup between two former FCS powers.
Jacksonville State also enters with a concerning road history. Since moving to the FBS level before the 2023 season, the Gamecocks are 0-6 straight up in nonconference road games, with only one point-spread cover.
Those numbers help explain why the market has North Dakota State favored. They don’t tell the entire story.
Why Jacksonville State Can Keep It Close
There is plenty to like about Jacksonville State catching a full touchdown.
The Gamecocks have been strong enough to reach—and cover—in bowl games during each of their first three seasons of eligibility. They also won the Conference USA regular-season championship in 2025.
Second-year head coach Charles Kelly took over after Rich Rodriguez returned to West Virginia before last season. It was clear from the beginning that Kelly knew what he was doing.
Jacksonville State opened last season as a 20-point underdog at Central Florida and lost by only seven. More importantly, the Gamecocks competed at the line of scrimmage throughout the game.

North Dakota State Faces Major Turnover
North Dakota State has operated several levels above most of its FCS competition for nearly two decades. However, the challenge becomes considerably tougher against a stronger 12-game schedule.
The Bison must replace a 1,000-yard running back, a 1,000-yard receiver and a fifth consecutive starting quarterback who was selected in the NFL Draft. Producing five straight NFL-drafted quarterbacks is an incredible accomplishment for any program, let alone one that spent all those years competing at the FCS level.
Now the offense belongs to fifth-year senior Nathan Hayes.
Hayes has spent most of his career as a third-string quarterback. He may eventually prove capable of keeping the North Dakota State machine running, but we need to see it before trusting him to cover a touchdown against an experienced Jacksonville State team.
The Gamecocks return plenty of offensive weapons and have a proven 58-year-old head coach entering his second season in charge.

We expect this game to remain competitive throughout.
The Fargo Dome will be loud, and North Dakota State’s history deserves respect. But the Bison are replacing significant offensive production, including another NFL-caliber quarterback, while Jacksonville State brings back enough talent and experience to handle the step up in competition.
