The MLB stretch run 2026 is officially here, and every series is starting to carry a little more weight. With roughly five weeks left in the regular season, division races are tightening, Wild Card contenders are running out of time, and injuries that might have been manageable in May can completely reshape a team's October outlook. The final month is not just about records anymore — it is about health, momentum, pitching depth and who is positioned to survive when the games get serious.

The National League Heavyweights

Start with the Milwaukee Brewers.

At 81-50, Milwaukee owns baseball's best record entering August 24. The Brewers have created separation in the NL Central, although the Cubs remain firmly in the postseason picture at 75-56.

Then there is Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are 80-51, essentially matching Milwaukee at the top of baseball.

Los Angeles could also be getting stronger at exactly the right time.

Dodgers Help On The Way

  • Tyler Glasnow is expected back from the injured list
  • Shohei Ohtani has progressed to live batting practice in his pitching work
  • The Dodgers remain one of baseball's deepest rosters

The top of the National League currently looks intimidating.

NL Contenders To Watch

  • Milwaukee Brewers — 81-50
  • Los Angeles Dodgers — 80-51
  • Atlanta Braves — 76-55
  • Chicago Cubs — 75-56
  • Philadelphia Phillies — 73-58
  • San Diego Padres — 71-60
  • Arizona Diamondbacks — 69-62

Nobody wants to draw some of these teams in a short October series.

Boston Is Making The AL East Very Interesting

The AL East may be developing into one of the best races in baseball.

Tampa Bay remains in first at 77-53, but the Rays have gone just 3-7 over their last 10 games.

That has opened the door.

The Yankees are 74-56.

And the Boston Red Sox are coming fast.

Boston is now 71-59, has won three straight and is 7-3 over its last 10.

But the most interesting number may be its run differential.

AL East Run Differential

Boston: +99

New York: +100

That does not look like a team surviving on luck.

It looks like a legitimate contender.

Boston was only 50-48 on July 19, although the Red Sox were already in the middle of a 13-game winning streak.

They have continued building from there.

The AL East is far from finished.

The Yankees Have An October-Sized Injury Problem

New York has positioned itself well for the postseason.

The question is what the roster will look like when October actually arrives.

Yankees Injuries To Monitor

  • Aaron Judge — returning from a stress fracture in his ribs
  • Max Fried — recovering from a left elbow bone bruise
  • Ryan McMahon — Grade 2 thumb sprain
  • Giancarlo Stanton — left calf strain after previously dealing with a right calf issue

Stanton could potentially miss the remainder of the season.

That is a lot of important production either unavailable or working its way back.

The Yankees still have an excellent record and an American League-best +100 run differential.

But their postseason ceiling could come down to one question:

How Healthy Are The Yankees On October 1?

Because being the better team on paper matters a lot less if several of your most important players are unavailable.

The AL West Has Become Complete Chaos

This is where things start getting wild.

The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are both 65-66.

A division race potentially being controlled by teams sitting below .500 this late in the year tells you everything you need to know.

Every series starts carrying postseason weight.

Seattle remains alive at 62-69, but its margin for error is shrinking quickly.

AL West Picture

  • Houston — 65-66
  • Texas — 65-66
  • Seattle — 62-69

Those head-to-head games are basically becoming playoff games before October even arrives.

Toronto And Baltimore Are Still Hanging Around

Neither Toronto nor Baltimore has played consistently enough to inspire enormous confidence.

But neither is dead.

Toronto sits at 64-68.

Baltimore is 63-68.

Toronto is only 1½ games outside a Wild Card position, with Baltimore two games back.

Late-August baseball can change extremely quickly.

An eight-game winning streak can completely reshape the standings.

An eight-game losing streak can end a season.

That is the pressure of the stretch run.

The National League Wild Card Could Get Nasty

The National League has its own collection of dangerous teams.

Teams In The Mix

  • Chicago — 75-56
  • Philadelphia — 73-58
  • San Diego — 71-60
  • Arizona — 69-62
  • Miami — 67-64

There are not many easy outs in that group.

More importantly, several of these teams have enough pitching or offensive firepower to knock out one of the league's giants in a short Wild Card series.

That is what makes October baseball dangerous.

You can dominate for six months, win 95-plus games and then run into two starting pitchers throwing the best games of their seasons.

Suddenly it is over.

Who Does FeedMe Trust Right Now?

If we are separating teams into groups heading toward September, three National League clubs stand above the rest.

The Top Tier

Milwaukee

Los Angeles

Atlanta

Those are the three NL teams we would least want to see in October right now.

Then come the Yankees and Red Sox.

New York owns the stronger record, but Boston's run differential and recent trajectory make the Red Sox particularly interesting.

Tampa Bay obviously belongs in the conversation as well, although the Rays' recent 3-7 stretch deserves attention.

The Teams Nobody Wants To Face

Then there is the second group.

These teams may not enter October as the favorites, but they are more than capable of ending somebody else's season.

  • October Disruptors
  • Philadelphia
  • Chicago
  • San Diego
  • Arizona

You do not necessarily need to be baseball's best team to win the World Series.

You need to:

  • Reach the postseason
  • Stay healthy
  • Have two or three starters dealing
  • Get timely offense
  • Catch fire for about four weeks

Baseball has shown us that formula plenty of times.

Health Could Decide Everything

This time of year makes injuries especially important.

In May, a player can miss several weeks and still have months to recover.

In late August, the calendar becomes part of the injury report

A setback now can impact:

  • Division races
  • Wild Card positioning
  • Playoff rotations
  • Bullpen roles
  • Lineup depth
  • October availability

That is why the Yankees' injuries matter.

It is why Los Angeles getting pitching help matters.

And it is why every late-season injury update deserves more attention than it did three months ago.

Five Weeks. Everything To Play For.

For Milwaukee and Los Angeles, September is about positioning themselves for the easiest possible road through October.

For Tampa Bay, New York and Boston, there is still an AL East race to settle.

For Houston and Texas, almost every night could change who controls the AL West.

For Toronto and Baltimore, there simply are not many games left to waste.

And hanging over every contender is the one variable nobody can completely control:

Health.

FeedMe Final Take

The best roster on paper does not automatically win the World Series.

The best team in April does not win it.

And the club sitting on top of the standings in late August does not receive a trophy for being there.

October usually comes down to a simpler formula:

Get In. Get Healthy. Get Hot.

The team that enters the postseason healthy, gets elite pitching at the right moment and catches fire for a few weeks is the team nobody wants to face.

The postseason has not officially started.

But for about a dozen teams around Major League Baseball, the playoff games have basically already begun.

FeedMe Edge

September tells us who gets in. October tells us who was actually built for it.
