College Football Injury Update — September 7, 2026

Monday’s post-Week 1 injury news produced several meaningful updates. Washington’s backfield took multiple hits, Washington State is likely losing its top returning receiver for Saturday, and Miami will be without a starting cornerback for an extended period. We also received important updates involving Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway, Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy and Iowa running back L.J. Phillips.

WASHINGTON — MULTIPLE RUNNING BACKS SIDELINED

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Quaid Carr and Jayden Limar will undergo surgery and miss extended time with upper-body injuries. Jordan Washington is also dealing with a knee injury and is questionable for Saturday’s game against Utah State.

BETTING IMPACT

This is the biggest cluster injury on Monday’s board. Losing Carr and Limar simultaneously removes two pieces from Washington’s rotation, and the situation becomes more serious if Jordan Washington cannot play. Washington should still be favored comfortably against Utah State, but the depleted backfield matters when evaluating a large spread, rushing production and possible player props.

WASHINGTON STATE — TONY FREEMAN LIKELY OUT

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Wide receiver Tony Freeman suffered a knee injury during the Apple Cup and is trending toward missing Saturday’s road game against Kansas State.

BETTING IMPACT

Freeman entered the season as Washington State’s best returning receiver, making this more than a routine depth-chart absence. His likely loss takes away an experienced target from quarterback Caden Pinnick before a difficult road matchup. This is a legitimate downgrade to Washington State’s passing game and deserves attention when evaluating the spread and team total.

MIAMI — O.J. FREDERIQUE OUT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting cornerback Romanas “O.J.” Frederique Jr. was injured during Miami’s opener against Stanford and is expected to be sidelined for quite a while. Although one injury board labeled it as a knee issue, reports from the game indicated that Frederique injured his shoulder.

Fellow cornerback Ja’boree Antoine is also unavailable, while running back Jordan Lyle’s status remains unsettled.

BETTING IMPACT

Frederique is a proven starter and one of Miami’s best defensive backs. Miami has enough depth to survive Thursday’s matchup with Florida A&M, but losing multiple secondary pieces becomes more important once the schedule strengthens. This is a meaningful defensive injury, even if it does not immediately change this week’s large point spread.

BAYLOR — DJ LAGWAY DAY-TO-DAY

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting quarterback DJ Lagway is day-to-day with an ankle injury suffered against Auburn. Wide receiver Jadon Porter is also day-to-day with an undisclosed issue.

BETTING IMPACT

Lagway is easily the most important name on Baylor’s injury list. Baylor plays Prairie View A&M next, so the Bears may decide there is no reason to push him. His status matters more for playing-time expectations and Baylor’s offensive rotation than it does for determining whether the Bears should win the game.

OLE MISS — KEWAN LACY AVOIDS MAJOR INJURY

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Star running back Kewan Lacy left Sunday’s victory over Louisville with a leg or thigh bruise. The early word is that the injury is not considered serious. Wide receiver Deuce Alexander was also evaluated during the game but returned and finished the night.

BETTING IMPACT

Lacy is one of the most valuable running backs in the country, so his practice participation needs to be followed closely. For now, this is a monitor rather than a reason to downgrade Ole Miss. Any missed practice time or change in his status would matter for the spread, team total and rushing props.

IOWA — L.J. PHILLIPS COULD HAVE A HIGH-ANKLE SPRAIN

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back L.J. Phillips suffered what is believed to be a high-ankle sprain in Iowa’s opener. He is currently questionable for Saturday’s rivalry game against Iowa State.

BETTING IMPACT

The matchup makes this more important. Iowa generally leans heavily on its running game, and high-ankle injuries can affect both availability and explosiveness. Phillips’ practice status and Iowa’s expected backfield rotation need to be confirmed before betting offensive props or the game total.

INDIANA — KHOBIE MARTIN OUT UNTIL AROUND MIDSEASON

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back Khobie Martin is expected to remain out until approximately the middle of the season because of an arm injury.

BETTING IMPACT

Martin rushed for 505 yards and six touchdowns during Indiana’s championship season, but the Hoosiers still have Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. available. This is a real rotation loss, although Indiana’s depth and Saturday’s matchup with Howard should prevent an immediate major market reaction.

UAB — PAYTON KIRKLAND OUT INDEFINITELY

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Left tackle Payton Kirkland left the Illinois game with a leg injury and did not return. The current injury board lists him as out indefinitely.

BETTING IMPACT

An injury to the starting left tackle deserves more attention than an ordinary depth loss. Kirkland’s absence affects pass protection and continuity across an offensive line that already faced problems against Illinois. UAB’s replacement plan needs to be confirmed before its next competitive matchup.

FLORIDA — ERIC SINGLETON HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Wide receiver Eric Singleton is considered highly questionable for Saturday’s game against Campbell because of an ankle injury. Davian Groce will miss at least another week with a back injury. Running back Evan Pryor and tight end Evan Chieca are moving closer to returning.

BETTING IMPACT

Singleton is the Florida injury with the most betting relevance. The opponent reduces the urgency, but being down multiple receivers could affect Florida’s passing volume and ability to cover a large number. Pryor’s expected return would help restore backfield depth.

TEXAS — COLE HUTSON INELIGIBLE; DERREK COOPER IN A BOOT

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Veteran offensive lineman Cole Hutson remains unavailable while his eligibility appeal is being resolved. Freshman running back Derrek Cooper will be in a walking boot for the foreseeable future following an ankle or foot injury.

BETTING IMPACT

Hutson is the more important loss because of his experience and ability to play multiple positions across the offensive line. Cooper was third on the running back depth chart, making his absence more of a depth issue than an immediate spread mover.

TENNESSEE — JOAKIM DODSON OUT FOR THE SEASON

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Wide receiver and return specialist Joakim Dodson suffered an LCL injury against Furman and will miss the remainder of the season.

BETTING IMPACT

This is a season-ending injury, but Dodson was listed behind the starting slot receiver. The biggest immediate effect comes on special teams and receiver depth. It should not create a major adjustment to Tennessee’s power rating by itself.

MINNESOTA — RYAN ESTRADA OUT FOR THE SEASON

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back Ryan Estrada suffered a season-ending knee injury in Minnesota’s opener.

BETTING IMPACT

This reduces Minnesota’s backfield depth, but it is not currently a major standalone market injury. The impact grows only if the Gophers lose another back or are forced to change their expected rotation.

ILLINOIS — JAYSHON PLATT UNLIKELY TO PLAY

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Wide receiver Jayshon Platt has been downgraded to unlikely for Saturday’s game against Duke because of an undisclosed injury.

BETTING IMPACT

This is a receiver-depth concern for Illinois entering a much tougher matchup. It is not a major power-rating injury on its own, but it matters more if another Illinois receiver is limited later in the week.

KANSAS STATE — MEKHI MASON QUESTIONABLE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting linebacker Mekhi Mason suffered a knee injury against Nicholls. Kansas State indicated the injury may not be as serious as initially feared, but his availability against Washington State remains uncertain.

BETTING IMPACT

Mason is an important piece of the Kansas State defense. His possible absence matters, although Washington State potentially losing Tony Freeman could partially offset the matchup concern. Practice participation should provide a clearer answer later in the week.

BYU — RAIDER DAMUNI EXPECTED TO MISS TIME

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting safety Raider Damuni suffered a frightening lower-body injury against Utah Tech. The injury is not believed to be season-ending, but he is expected to miss several weeks. Running back Sione Moa is also sidelined, although his injury is not expected to end his season.

BETTING IMPACT

Damuni is the more important loss because of his role and experience in BYU’s secondary. The improved prognosis is encouraging, but the defense still loses a starter for the short term.

NEBRASKA — OWEN CHAMBLISS REMAINS QUESTIONABLE

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Starting linebacker Owen Chambliss missed the opener with a hamstring injury and remains questionable for Saturday’s game against Bowling Green.

BETTING IMPACT

Chambliss was expected to be one of Nebraska’s best linebackers. Bowling Green may not force a major line adjustment, but another absence would leave Nebraska without an important defensive starter for a second straight week.

KANSAS — CAM PICKETT PRACTICING

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Wide receiver Cam Pickett is practicing after suffering a leg injury, but Kansas has not confirmed his availability for Friday’s game against Missouri.

BETTING IMPACT

Practicing is encouraging, but Friday’s earlier kickoff shortens the evaluation window. Bettors should wait for a firm designation before factoring Pickett into Kansas receiving props or offensive projections.

UTAH — DANIEL BRAY ON TRACK TO RETURN

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back Daniel Bray left Utah’s opener with a concussion but is currently expected to be available against Arkansas.

BETTING IMPACT

This is positive news for Utah’s backfield. Because concussion clearance can change during the week, Bray’s final availability still needs to be confirmed before kickoff.

ALABAMA — THREE PLAYMAKERS GETTING CLOSER

WHAT WAS REPORTED

Running back AK Dear and safety Jireh Edwards are the closest of Alabama’s injured players to returning. Wide receiver Noah Rogers is progressing but appears to be slightly behind them.

BETTING IMPACT

These are positive developments rather than fresh losses. Alabama may regain meaningful depth for Saturday’s game at Kentucky, but none of the three should be treated as officially available until the week’s practice and travel updates are complete.

ADDITIONAL PLAYERS TO MONITOR

Arkansas running back Cam Settles is being monitored, although the coaching staff hopes he will be full-go against Utah.

Syracuse wide receiver Calvin Russell is expected to return from his Achilles injury within the next few weeks.

West Virginia running back Chris Talley aggravated his hamstring while warming up before the opener.

Louisiana wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. is questionable with a knee injury.

UTSA wide receiver David Amador II is questionable with an undisclosed injury.

UCLA wide receiver Sean Ellis is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury.

Missouri linebacker John Coffee is listed as questionable with a knee injury.

Notre Dame wide receiver Quincy Porter remains a knee-injury monitor after missing the Wisconsin game.

MONDAY NIGHT AVAILABILITY

Florida State ruled out wide receiver Tae’Shawn Gelsey and tight end Gavin Markey for Monday night’s game against SMU.

BOTTOM LINE

The most important developments are Washington’s depleted backfield, Tony Freeman’s likely absence for Washington State, O.J. Frederique’s extended absence at Miami, DJ Lagway’s ankle and Kewan Lacy’s practice status. Iowa’s L.J. Phillips also deserves close attention because of the possibility of a high-ankle sprain before the Iowa State rivalry game.

Not every “out indefinitely” or “questionable” listing carries the same betting weight. The market-sensitive situations are the ones involving starting quarterbacks, featured skill players, starting offensive linemen and multiple injuries at the same position.
