The first full Saturday of the college football season delivered one controversial finish, an unexpected blowout in Baton Rouge and several highly ranked favorites that gave bettors an immediate reason to reconsider their preseason ratings.
BIGGEST STATEMENT: LSU DESTROYS CLEMSON
Final: LSU 51, Clemson 10
LSU closed around a 10-point favorite and covered without any drama. The Tigers scored on the ground, created explosive plays through the air and controlled the game from the opening quarter.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 230 yards and added 113 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Clemson never found a consistent answer for his mobility. Watkins finished with seven receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
This was not simply Clemson losing a difficult road opener. LSU beat the Tigers by 41 points and handed Dabo Swinney the worst loss of his head-coaching career. LSU’s power rating deserves an immediate upgrade, while Clemson’s offense and overall roster strength require a serious reevaluation.
MICHIGAN ESCAPES ON A CONTROVERSIAL HAIL MARY
Final: Michigan 13, Western Michigan 12
Michigan entered as approximately a four-touchdown favorite but needed a miracle to avoid an outright loss. Western Michigan appeared to have completed the upset when the clock reached zero, but a replay review restored one second.
Bryce Underwood used the extra play to connect with J.J. Buchanan on a 47-yard Hail Mary for the winning touchdown.
Michigan won the game but was never close to covering. The Wolverines scored on their opening possession and then spent most of the afternoon struggling with turnovers, protection and offensive consistency.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
Michigan’s offense looked nothing like that of a legitimate four-touchdown favorite. The Wolverines survived, but the performance creates major concerns before their upcoming game against Oklahoma. Western Michigan cashed comfortably for underdog bettors and nearly produced the biggest upset of opening weekend.
OREGON SURVIVES, BOISE STATE CASHES
Final: Oregon 34, Boise State 27
Oregon closed around a 25-point favorite but trailed 17-14 at halftime and never threatened the point spread. Boise State turned early Oregon mistakes into points and remained within one possession late in the fourth quarter.
Dante Moore eventually took control, completing 28 of 37 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Oregon finished with 497 total yards compared with 274 for Boise State, but penalties, special-teams mistakes and inconsistent execution kept the game close.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
Oregon’s offense still produced nearly 500 yards, so this was not a complete collapse. The concern was game control. Boise State showed that Oregon can be pressured into mistakes and prevented from playing at its preferred pace. The Ducks won, but anyone laying more than three touchdowns was never comfortable.
AUBURN WINS, BAYLOR GETS THE MONEY
Final: Auburn 17, Baylor 16
Auburn entered as roughly a 6.5-point favorite but escaped by one point. Baylor remained competitive for four quarters and covered the spread comfortably.
The game was tight, physical and far lower scoring than the market expected from two teams with offensive upside. Auburn earned the win, but the Tigers never created the separation expected from a touchdown favorite.

Baylor proved it could hold up against an SEC opponent and may have been undervalued entering the season. Auburn’s offense deserves continued monitoring. The Tigers won, but a one-point result does not support the preseason market’s confidence in them.
OHIO STATE STARTS FAST AND NEVER STOPS
Final: Ohio State 56, Ball State 3
Ohio State covered a massive number by scoring exactly 14 points in every quarter. Julian Sayin completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 151 yards and two scores.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
There was no look-ahead problem before the Texas game. Ohio State handled an inferior opponent exactly as an elite team should: fast start, clean quarterback play and no late backdoor opportunity.
TEXAS SENDS A MESSAGE BEFORE OHIO STATE
Final: Texas 59, Texas State 7
Arch Manning completed 20 of 27 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Texas forced turnovers, created explosive plays and had the game completely under control before turning it over to the backups.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
Texas covered a number in the low 30s and looked prepared for its upcoming showdown with Ohio State. Manning’s efficiency was the most encouraging part of the performance. The market will now have to decide how much of this dominance carries over against the best team in the country.
ALABAMA HANDLES EAST CAROLINA
Final: Alabama 48, East Carolina 10
Alabama covered a spread that closed in the upper 20s. Keelon Russell accounted for 342 total yards, including 86 rushing yards and a touchdown. Alabama scored 28 points in the second quarter and led 38-7 at halftime.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
The final result was convincing, although Alabama’s offense went quiet in the third quarter. Russell’s mobility adds another dimension, but the Crimson Tide will need more consistent four-quarter execution against stronger opponents.
INDIANA WINS BIG BUT FAILS TO COVER
Final: Indiana 52, North Texas 16
Indiana extended its winning streak to 17 games, but North Texas covered a closing number around 40. Josh Hoover completed 13 of 16 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns in his Indiana debut.
Hoover also demonstrated his toughness after taking a facemask penalty that left him bloodied. He remained in the game and threw a touchdown three plays later.
BETTING TAKEAWAY
Indiana’s offense remained explosive after replacing Fernando Mendoza, but the defense allowed North Texas to score 16 points and keep the final margin below the inflated number. Indiana may still be elite, but bettors will continue paying a premium after last season’s championship run.
OTHER IMPRESSIVE FAVORITES
GEORGIA 63, TENNESSEE STATE 3
Gunner Stockton completed 15 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Frazier scored three times on only four carries. Georgia did exactly what was expected and avoided allowing the game to become competitive.
PENN STATE 45, MARSHALL 0
Rocco Becht threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns. Penn State’s defense recorded a shutout, and the Nittany Lions covered a number in the low-to-mid 20s.
IOWA 40, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 0
Iowa produced one of Saturday’s most complete performances. Kamari Moulton rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense completely shut down Northern Illinois. Iowa covered a spread that closed around 31.
BYU 63, UTAH TECH 7
BYU led 42-0 at halftime and covered a number around 50. Bear Bachmeier threw three touchdown passes and ran for another before the starters were removed. BYU forced four turnovers and did not commit one.
TEXAS TECH 33, ABILENE CHRISTIAN 10
Texas Tech won by 23 but never approached covering a spread that closed above 40. The Red Raiders produced yards but failed to turn enough drives into touchdowns. This was a clear downgrade compared with the market’s enormous preseason expectation.
SATURDAY’S KEY INJURIES
BYU
Starting safety Raider Damuni suffered an apparent left knee or leg injury and had to be carried off without placing weight on the leg. BYU is awaiting MRI results, and Damuni is considered doubtful for next week’s game against Arizona.
This is the most concerning injury from Saturday. Damuni is an experienced starter and an important part of BYU’s secondary. His status could matter against a much stronger Arizona offense.
INDIANA
Starting cornerbacks A.J. Harris and Jamari Sharpe both left during the first quarter and did not return. Running back Khobie Martin also exited during the first half.
The two cornerback injuries are the bigger concern because they happened at the same position. Indiana finished the game with Ryland Gandy and Jaylen Bell handling most of the work at cornerback. Updates on Harris and Sharpe will be important before next week’s matchup.
OREGON STATE
Offensive lineman Carter Guillaume suffered a left foot injury against Houston. He left on crutches and was later seen wearing a protective boot.
Guillaume had entered the game for starting left guard Nathan Elu. This is primarily an offensive-line depth concern, but it becomes more significant if he is forced to miss extended time.
TEXAS A&M
Freshman wide receiver Madden Williams will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a lower-body injury that requires surgery.
Williams was not one of Texas A&M’s primary starting receivers, so this should not produce a meaningful adjustment to the Aggies’ point spread. It is still a disappointing long-term loss for a highly regarded freshman.
BOTTOM LINE
LSU produced Saturday’s biggest power-rating upgrade, while Clemson and Michigan created the most serious concerns. Oregon survived but was never close to covering, Baylor proved competitive against Auburn and the biggest injury to monitor is BYU safety Raider Damuni.
The opening weekend also reinforced an important betting lesson: winning and covering are two different things. Michigan, Oregon, Auburn, Indiana and Texas Tech all won, but every one of them failed to justify the price the market placed on them.
